Just for fun, Film Project

What the Flock?

Let’s set the scene

It ‘s 2013, products like Tik Tok don’t quite exist yet and an idea comes to me to make a short film about flamingos (well kinda…). I had never made a short film before unless you count two minute long animations in Adobe Flash (RIP) and I had always wanted to explore this form of media for storytelling.

Masked in gold, what class of Ave he hails from remains ambiguous. And so he is the Bird King, a Byronic hero of sorts. Mesmerized by an animal documentary program about Flamingo wildlife that contrasts his surroundings, he muses what it may be like to connect with this Flamboyant group of waterfowl. Inspired by 1930 Busby Berkeley films, Steve Steigman's photograph of the "Blown Away Guy", Merry Melodies- A "Day at the Zoo", Animal things andGirly things, and of course Wes Andersen. It was a fun idea that people were excited to help me create. I could not have done this without any of them. This is my first time doing this.

So, I started the process of making it happen, which involved me creating a storyboard, a film treatment, and a lot conversations recruiting both my friends and anybody who had some technical skills with a camera.

Looking back, there were a lot of parallels to making a product . For instance, when we were done filiming, I still had to all the video editing to do!

The original sketches from my notebook…

Pieces from the Film Treatment (or Pitch)

Taken right after one of my favorite scenes which was inspired by old Busby Berkely films….

Fun fact: Flamingos are the most social bird there are.
